The [NEW!] Trainer, Session 5, Part I

She’s gone! The night tremors have ceased. My left hand has stopped twitching violently at random. I don’t even wet the bed any more. Oh wait, I haven’t wet the bed since I was 20. Bed-wetting aside, my trainer is gone!

You’ll have a much better understanding of the relief I feel that there won’t be a Session 5 with that trainer. This post is still worth a read. No, I didn’t puke, pass-out, cry, get called names, punch anybody in the face, BUT I learned a lot and I want to pass that on to you.

Flight from Paradise

I have no idea where my old trainer is. She did warn me that she might randomly disappear at some point. Then she told me she was going to stay. I guess that made the disappearance random… if she had told me she would disappear randomly, it wouldn’t be random. I get it now.

She said she would be gone for a week for a workshop and to email her after that. Well email sent, no response. YMCA staff have confirmed that she is not working there anymore. They have no more of a response than I have.

She really was a good trainer. The sessions were INTENSE. (again, read the former posts on the topic) I’ll never make the mistake of telling another trainer that I run marathons.

Oh Crap!

I think ALL the trainers here at the YMCA know that. My new trainer knows. But, unlike the old trainer, he doesn’t seem to take it as a fun opportunity to break someone who likes pain. I wasn’t constantly dizzy and on the verge of vomiting during our session like I was during every session with my old trainer.

Don’t get me wrong, I still felt like a fool. I still had to face my inadequacies. In fact, though the session wasn’t half as hard as with my old trainer, I left feeling twice as deflated, which, I think, is the point of personal training. I do it to feel terrible about myself physically and mentally.

My new trainer asked blunt questions. I gave sheepish, honest answers. “How often do you do planks?” “Um, zero sets, seven days a week.” I hate ab work. I do it so little that I actually don’t have abdominal muscles. I wear a special cosmetic plate on my mid-section to look like a normal human. Apparently runners need abs. Boo.

The REALLY Bad News

After all his strength and balance testing, the trainer looked me square in the eye and said, “Yep, you’re a runner,” to which I replied, “That wasn’t a compliment.” He shrugged.

The irony is that as I’ve trained specifically for running 50 miles in one day one of the things I’ve sacrificed is my fitness. It’s not really okay that this has happened. It’s not a sustainable reality. These last few weeks as I hit some huge running numbers (for most people that is) and I’ve just been praying that my body holds together for just three more weeks till race day.

TLC

Not the band. Yuck. I take this public platform to promise myself that after the race (October 20th, 2012) that I’ll ease off the miles and get back to general fitness. Give my body a little TLC if you will. It has earned it. I’ve made changes to my training already to accommodate strength training again. I’m treating my long runs with better reverence and recovery. It’s all working.

I’m thankful to the people that I’ve talked to and learned from as I seek to run farther than I ever have. I’ve learned so much and have so much more to learn. You all make up a strong network of support that will get me to the finish line. I feel like I’ve found a new, vital link in this network in my new trainer. If you’re serious about taking your fitness to the next level, you need to get one. Even if you just do a handful of sessions, the right person can set you on the right trajectory toward achieving your goals.

I have my last 1/2 hour training with my new trainer this thursday, so look for The Trainer, Session 5, Part II a week from today.
